Why the Best Drone Shots Aren’t Always the Most Difficult
Anyone can move a drone. The challenge is understanding why you're moving it.
As drone technology continues to advance, aerial filmmakers have access to aircraft that are faster, smaller, more powerful, and more capable than ever before. FPV drones can chase athletes through incredibly technical environments. Cinema drones can capture stabilized imagery with remarkable precision. Custom UAVs can carry professional cinema cameras at speeds that would have been difficult to imagine only a few years ago.
But having a capable drone doesn't automatically create great aerial cinematography.
At Avionik Studios, one of the most important lessons we've learned is that the best drone shot isn't necessarily the fastest, closest, or most technically difficult.
The best shot is the one that serves the story.
Whether we're flying an FPV drone, DJI Inspire 3, or one of our custom Medium Lift platforms, every movement should have a reason behind it.
That is the difference between simply flying a drone and approaching the aircraft as a cinematographer.
Drone Movement Should Have Purpose
Aerial cinematography is ultimately another form of camera movement.
The drone just happens to give the camera an extraordinary amount of freedom.
You can push toward a subject, pull away, orbit, descend, climb, track alongside it, reveal an environment, or transition between multiple perspectives within a single shot.
The temptation is to use all of that freedom.
Sometimes, you shouldn't.
Before taking off, we like to understand what the shot is actually supposed to accomplish.
Are we introducing a location?
Are we establishing the speed of a vehicle?
Are we revealing the scale of a mountain?
Are we following an athlete through an environment?
Are we creating tension?
Or are we simply allowing the audience to experience a moment?
Once you understand the purpose of the shot, the appropriate drone movement becomes much easier to identify.
FPV vs. Gimbal Drones: Choosing Movement Based on the Shot
One of the biggest advantages of having multiple drone platforms available is being able to select an aircraft based on the creative objective rather than trying to make one drone accomplish everything.
FPV drones are incredible tools for creating immersive movement.
An experienced FPV Drone Pilot can fly through tight environments, accelerate alongside fast-moving subjects, descend terrain, transition through obstacles, and create perspectives that would be extremely difficult with traditional camera systems.
But FPV isn't always the answer.
Sometimes an Inspire 3 slowly pushing toward a subject creates a much stronger image.
A stabilized gimbal drone allows the camera movement and aircraft movement to operate somewhat independently. This creates opportunities for controlled pans, long-lens tracking shots, slow reveals, and extremely precise compositions.
Our Medium Lift platform introduces another option by allowing us to carry larger cinema cameras and different lens combinations while maintaining significant aircraft performance.
The platform should always follow the creative requirement.
Not the other way around.
Speed Doesn't Automatically Make a Shot Better
Speed is one of the most exciting elements of FPV drone filmmaking.
It's also easy to overuse.
A high-speed proximity pass can create an incredible sense of energy, especially when filming automotive, aviation, skiing, mountain biking, motorsports, and other action sports.
But constantly flying fast can actually make a sequence feel less dynamic.
Contrast matters.
A slow establishing shot followed by an aggressive FPV sequence can make the speed feel dramatically more powerful.
Similarly, following a vehicle at speed doesn't necessarily mean the drone needs to move aggressively around it.
Sometimes locking into the subject and allowing the environment to move through the frame communicates speed more effectively than constantly changing direction.
Professional drone filmmaking is about knowing when to push the aircraft—and when to let the shot breathe.
Read the Environment Before You Fly
Some of the strongest cinematic drone shots aren't created by the aircraft alone.
They're created by understanding the environment.
Mountains, buildings, trees, roads, bridges, foreground objects, shadows, and terrain can all become compositional tools.
Instead of simply flying above the landscape, we look for ways to move through it.
A foreground element passing close to the camera can create depth.
Following the contour of a mountain can emphasize speed.
Starting behind an object before revealing the subject can create anticipation.
Flying low over terrain can make the viewer feel immersed in the environment.
This is particularly important for FPV cinematography because FPV drones can interact with environments in ways traditional aerial platforms often cannot.
The environment becomes part of the camera movement.
Anticipation Is One of the Most Important Skills for a Drone Pilot
When filming moving subjects, reacting isn't enough.
You have to anticipate.
This becomes especially important when filming action sports, automotive, and aviation.
A professional Drone Pilot needs to understand where the subject is going before it gets there.
When filming a mountain biker, for example, the pilot should understand the upcoming terrain, the rider's likely line, changes in speed, and where the strongest composition will occur.
Automotive filmmaking presents similar challenges. Corners, acceleration zones, elevation changes, braking points, and road geometry all influence where the aircraft needs to be.
Aviation introduces another level entirely because of the speeds, distances, coordination, and safety considerations involved.
The better you understand the movement of your subject, the less you're reacting with the drone.
Instead, you're positioning the camera where the action is about to happen.
Lens Choice Changes How We Fly
One of the most overlooked relationships in aerial cinematography is the connection between lens choice and drone movement.
Changing focal length doesn't simply change the field of view.
It can change the entire flight.
Wide lenses tend to exaggerate movement and proximity. To make a subject feel large within the frame, the drone may need to physically move closer.
That can create incredibly immersive imagery, particularly with FPV drones.
Longer focal lengths create a completely different visual language.
Compression can make backgrounds appear closer to the subject while allowing the drone to operate farther away. Small aircraft movements become much more noticeable, and precise piloting becomes increasingly important.
With platforms such as our Medium Lift, the ability to fly different cinema cameras and lenses gives us considerably more control over how the aerial image feels.
The question is no longer simply, "Where should we fly?"
It's also:
"What lens tells this story best, and how should the aircraft move around it?"
Sometimes the Best Drone Movement Is No Movement
One of the hardest things for a drone pilot to learn is when to stop moving.
Because drones are capable of moving almost anywhere, pilots often feel like the aircraft should constantly be doing something.
That's not always true.
Sometimes holding a composition and allowing the subject to move through the frame produces a significantly stronger image.
Imagine a vehicle entering a massive landscape.
Instead of chasing it immediately, holding the drone stationary can allow the audience to understand the scale of the environment before transitioning into a tighter tracking sequence.
The same concept applies to skiing, mountain biking, aviation, and virtually every other form of action cinematography.
Movement is powerful because it contrasts against stillness.
Use both.
Repeatability Separates a Good Flight From a Professional One
Getting an incredible drone shot once is exciting.
Being able to repeat it is professional.
Commercial productions often require multiple takes.
Talent may need another attempt. A vehicle might need to reset. Lighting could change. The director may want a slightly different performance. Another camera department might need synchronization.
The Drone Pilot needs to reproduce the flight path consistently.
That means understanding reference points, speed, altitude, timing, camera orientation, and the movement of the subject.
Professional aerial cinematography isn't about getting lucky.
It's about being able to execute intentionally and consistently.
Work With the Director and DP, Not Around Them
Some of the strongest aerial sequences happen when the drone team becomes part of the creative conversation.
A professional drone crew shouldn't simply arrive on set and ask:
"Where do you want the drone?"
Instead, we want to understand what the director and Director of Photography are trying to accomplish.
What cameras are being used?
What lenses are being used on the ground?
How is the scene being covered?
What visual language has already been established?
Where does the aerial camera fit within that language?
The goal isn't to create a completely separate "drone shot."
The goal is to create an aerial image that feels like it belongs in the same film.
Develop Your Eye, Not Just Your Flying
Becoming a better FPV Drone Pilot or aerial cinematographer isn't only about accumulating more stick time.
Flying matters.
But so does studying cinematography.
Watch how cameras move in commercials and films.
Study composition.
Understand lighting.
Learn focal lengths.
Pay attention to foreground and background separation.
Study how editors connect shots.
Learn why certain movements create tension while others create calm.
Then take those concepts into the air.
Technical flying ability gives you control of the aircraft.
Understanding cinematography tells you what to do with it.
You need both.
The Drone Is Just the Tool

Put the camera where the story needs it to be.
Flying With Intention
Drone technology will continue getting better.
Aircraft will become faster.
Cameras will become smaller.
Transmission systems will improve.
Flight times will increase.
And new UAV platforms will continue expanding what's possible for filmmakers.
But technology alone won't create better aerial cinematography.
The pilot still has to make creative decisions.
Knowing when to accelerate.
Knowing when to slow down.
Knowing when to get close.
Knowing when to pull back.
And sometimes, knowing when not to move at all.
Whether you're an FPV Drone Pilot learning cinematic movement or a filmmaker incorporating professional drones into a production, the goal should never simply be to create the most difficult shot.
Create the shot that makes the audience feel something.
Because ultimately, the best drone pilots aren't simply flying aircraft.
They're moving cameras through three-dimensional space with intention.
And that's where great aerial cinematography begins.
